A Game where players never have to stop moving

Goal:Create a Mega Man like platformer that encourages players to use the resources they have, without having to rely on random resource drops from enemies to keep going.

Idea:Remove random drops for Health and special weapon ammunition and tie both of them into a meter system that rewards players for engaging with enemies. Make sure that the system doesn’t needlessly punish less-skilled players.

Execution:

Special Ammunition:

All special weapons share a common pool of ammunition that regenerates over time.

Meter System:

The Meter system is charged both by fighting enemies and getting hit. Spending the Meter both heals the player, as well as grants them a short damage boost. Activating it also lets you use your special weapons without having to spend ammunition.

Critical Mode:

Spending your energy meter only heals half of your maximum HP, unless you activate it when you only have 1 HP left. The game always knocks the players down to 1 HP before killing them, giving them a chance to actually spend meter. Furthermore, players receive a tremendous damage increase should they choose to activate their meter until then.
